Tips for the Black Mompreneur

mompreneur tips for black moms working moms Aug 01, 2022

As a Black woman, well it is only evident that I come from a long line of Black women. I have seen and experienced the extra hustle and bustle that we have to put in just to be recognized, but being a full-time mother and entrepreneur is a whole different story.

Black News Daily shared some important statistics about Black women businesses. Let’s take a look:

  • The number of businesses owned by women of color increased by 58% between 2007 and 2018
  • Black women are the largest female minority group of business owners.
  • Finding startup funding and mentorship remain some of the biggest hurdles that Black female entrepreneurs must contend with.

These statistics remain the same as of today. So not only are we as Black women still dealing with the headaches of having equal access to capital to help grow our businesses, but we are also still having to save mental space to be able to take care of home and the kids, if and when our day of being a boss end.

In a blog from girlboss.com, they interviewed 4 Women of Color that are entrepreneurs and mothers, and they provided some great tips to help the next Mompreneuer when going through the motions of running a business and maintaining a household:

  • Bricia Lopez – Owner of “Guelaguetzla”: “Ask for help. We have grown up looking at our mothers doing it all and busting their ass and we feel like we have to be that. My mom raised 4 children and worked with my dad. If my mom did it, why can’t I? But she had help. She had her tias, her mom and her sisters… Don’t be afraid to call a friend. You’re not less of a woman if you have to admit that you’re vulnerable. You are not less of a woman if you tell your friend, I need help. A lot of us want to be that strong woman, and a strong woman is strong enough to know when she needs help.”
  • Zolia Darton – Owner of “WORD agency”: “Be nice to yourself. Understand whatever you did that day was your best. If you feel like you need to do more, then there’s a new day. Everyday, understand that it happened, and that’s it. You can’t put too much pressure on yourself to perform. Find a community of people. Look for mothers who understand your experience and are unapologetically themselves so you can learn and feel inspired by them. And support each other. You’re going to make mistakes, but you can’t have regrets.”
  • Chelsey Luger – Journalist & Co-founder of “Well For Culture”: “If you are considering becoming self employed and running your own business, you have to be extremely passionate about what you’re doing or the motivation will not come naturally to you. I think there’s a lot of negative stigma about motherhood and the demands of motherhood, and I like to shy away from that. In my mind, yes, of course it’s a challenge, of course it has its highs and lows. But what in life doesn’t have ups and downs? This negativity makes a lot of women feel like they can’t be a career woman and a mother at the same time. That’s absolutely not the case.”
  • Paola Mathe – Owner of “Fanm Djanm”: “Fear shouldn’t stand in your way. I know having a child is much more difficult. Just start. Writing out a plan, practicing will help strengthen your chances in starting your business. Think about it over and over. Don’t say you wish, make it stronger. Talk to people surrounding you who support you. I also don’t like giving this type of advice as a person who believes she is privileged. You can’t just say, ‘yes do it’. There are folks who are single mothers, who don’t have family or friends to watch their child. But it is a matter of willpower. It’s a matter of starting, period. I am a big believer in honing your skills, writing the ideas, network, and then you can eventually get somewhere. I don’t think anything is impossible. When you realize you belong because you’ve worked hard for it, why not go for it?”

I don’t know who needed to read these tips today, but you’re welcome. These are some amazing tips that you can keep in the back of your mind for when you are seeking a little motivation on a stressful day of momming and bossing up!
